Together is an initiative set-up by Student.com, Sheffcare and Student Roost to provide an opportunity for local students and care home residents in Sheffield to connect, creating friendships and building networks outside of their accommodation.
The Together initiative has been launched as a direct response to research statistics showing that both students and the older generation in local communities are at risk of the negative impact of loneliness on mental health and wellbeing – with 70% of students experiencing loneliness at university.
Who can apply for the Together volunteering scheme
Students living in Student Roost accommodation in Sheffield will be invited to join the initiative to conduct intergenerational volunteering by being paired with a ‘buddy’ care home resident at one of the ten Sheffcare locations across the city. The result will be that both generations will share memories, advice and gain a positive experience. Successful applicants to the Together initiative will be eligible for one month’s free rent.

How to get one month’s free rent
To qualify for one month’s free rent, you must:
- be living in Student Roost accommodation in Sheffield, i.e. Sheffield 3, Sheffield 2, Hollis Croft, Cornerhouse or Laycock Studios; for 2019/20 academic year and,
- successfully complete an induction with Sheffcare; and,
- pass DBS checks; and,
- complete six sessions of volunteering across the first semester on 2019/20.

The Together initiative has limited availability and once filled, students can still take part in volunteering directly with Sheffcare but not be eligible for the one months’ free rent offer.
An additional request to take part in local PR/marketing activity may be requested by Student.com, Sheffcare or Student Roost as part of the initiative.
