Get to know Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is a city located in the state of Queensland, about 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Brisbane. Today it has a population of about 570,000 inhabitants, which makes it the sixth largest city in Australia.
The Gold Coast area used to be the home of many indigenous clans. James Cook was the first European to visit the region when he sailed along the coast in 1770 during his first voyage looking for the Terra Australis Incognita or unknown southern land. The region started to grow significantly in the 1920s when hotels were built in the Surfers Paradise area of the city. The Gold Coast has been a major tourist hub since at least the 1980s and is today known for great surfing, theme parks and nightlife.
Great climate and surfing
Famous for its white sand beaches, superb surf and burgeoning culinary scene, the Gold Coast boasts a buzzing nightlife and is a great location to study, especially for anyone who is passionate about surfing or food.
With unspoilt beaches on one side and lush rainforest on the other, the Gold Coast represents Australia at its most beautiful. Surfing is a way of life when you live here, so grab your board and sign up for lessons with the Surf Academy at Kurrawa Beach, or head out to Snapper Rocks to watch the championship surfers compete in the Quiksilver Pro World Surf League.
Student life
The Gold Coast area boasts an incredible number of gourmet restaurants and buzzing bars, making it a great study destination for every food lover. Enjoy a lazy weekend brunch overlooking the ocean at the iconic Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club, stock up on artisan sourdough at The Paddock Bakery, or combine organic health food with a pre-dinner yoga session at Bskt Café. After dark, have a great night out at one of the many bars or nightclubs in Gold Coast. The bar at the SkyPoint Observation Deck boasts incredible 360-degree ocean views.
Shopping is another favourite pastime for Gold Coast locals. Head to the Harbour Town Outlet Shopping Centre to pick up labels like Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren at bargain prices, or browse the big name chain stores in the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. If you prefer to search for unique, one-off pieces, work your way around the boutique stalls of the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets, where you’ll find a great choice of clothing, jewellery and accessories.
When you need a change of scenery and want to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the rainforest hinterland of the Gold Coast offers great possibilities to go out and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. You can hike for miles along the World Heritage rainforest trails of Springbrook National Park. Remember to keep an eye out for koalas!
Universities in Gold Coast
Three major universities have their campuses in the Gold Coast area. The oldest of these is Griffith University, which was established in 1971. Today it has an enrolment of about 50,000 students across five physical campuses in Queensland and a digital ‘campus’ for online studies. The Gold Coast campus is the largest of these with about 18,000 students. The Griffith University Village is within walking distance from the campus. It has cozy rooms as well as some great amenities like a basketball court and a swimming pool.
Bond University was the first private non-profit university in Australia when it was established in 1989. Today about 4,000 students study there. Almost half (46%) of these students are from outside Australia, so if you’re coming to Bond University from abroad, it should be easy to meet lots of other people who are also new in the country.
Another university that has a campus in the Gold Coast area is the Southern Cross University. Established in 1994, Southern Cross now has three campuses and about 19,000 students, including those who study online. The Gold Coast campus is the largest, with about 5,000 students. The campus is located right next to the Gold Coast airport and is very conveniently located if you enjoy going to the beach after your lectures. The campus is situated only 400 metres from the North Kirra Beach, so getting some sun or going for a swim after a day of school work will be easy.
There are also English language schools in the Gold Coast area. One of these is Shafston College, which offers English language as well as vocational courses.
