RMIT was founded by The Hon. Francis Ormond MLA as the Working Men's College in 1887. The idea for a technical college in Melbourne was actually proposed by the prominent grazier and philanthropist six years earlier. It started out by offering technical, business and arts classes “especially to working men”.
Since then, RMIT has grown from offering lessons focused on teaching applied skills for various trades, including architectural and mechanical drawing, theoretical and applied mechanics, plumbing, carpentry and painting, to an internationally respected university of technology, design and enterprise.
Before RMIT, the university went through a few name changes. It was renamed Melbourne Technical College in 1934 before changing again to Royal Melbourne Technical College in 1954. Six years later it adopted the name Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before settling on its current name, RMIT University, in 1992 when it became a public university.
In recognition of its educational service to the Commonwealth and its major contribution to World War II, it was awarded royal patronage by Queen Elizabeth in 1954. It remains the only higher education institution in Australia that can use “Royal” in its name as well as the Monarchy's coat of arms.
