Where is the University of Sussex located?
The University of Sussex is located in Falmer in Brighton, on the south coast of England.
Surrounded by the South Downs National Park, the University of Sussex has one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK. The campus combines open, very spacious, and peaceful green spaces with award-winning architecture.
The tiny village of Falmer sits deep in the beautiful South Downs countryside, a few miles north of the Brighton city centre. The village is more than 1,000 years old and got its name from the old English word ‘fallow’, meaning pale coloured, for the colour of the village pond.
Once a largely unnoticed rural village, the arrival of the A27 road and the Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club in recent decades has dramatically changed the dynamics of the area. The A27 is one of the busiest trunk roads in the UK, bringing to life a once-secluded village with a steady flow of whizzing cars and lorries.
But what has truly thrust the village into the limelight is the arrival of the English Premier League newcomers. The village serves as the home of Brighton & Hove Albion FC, where The Falmer Stadium, or the American Express Community Stadium for sponsorship purposes, hosts close to 32,000 proud and loud fans more than twenty times every year.
Close to Brighton
While life in the village has become more hectic, it remains a pretty and peaceful place, but it sits on the outskirts of one of the UK’s most popular seaside towns, just five miles northeast of Brighton.
Considered as ‘One of England’s Gems’ by respected travel publishers Lonely Planet, Brighton is lively and cosmopolitan with a strong social scene and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
The town has a historic association with the arts, so it has plenty of galleries, theatres, and cinemas. Each year it hosts England’s largest arts festival (Brighton Festival), which brings together film, theatre, dance, comedy, literature, music, street performances, and art.
It is also called ‘London by the Sea’ for its strong nightlife and possesses more restaurants per resident in England than anywhere else outside of London.
The university’s location is also within easy reach of London and major international airports at Gatwick and Heathrow.
South Downs National Park
Whenever you’re in need of a break from regular uni life, step off campus and explore the surrounding hills and woodlands of the South Downs National Park, a perfect place for walking and cycling. In South Downs National Park you can find for example the famous white cliffs of Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.

History of the University of Sussex
Officially formed in 1961, the University of Sussex was the first of a new generation of ‘plate glass universities’ - a group of universities in the United Kingdom established or promoted to university status in the 1960s.
The university was established as a company in 1959 before being granted a Royal Charter on August 16, 1961. Other than Keele University, it became the first university to be established in the UK since the Second World War.
Sussex University quickly grew from the 52 students it opened its doors with to 3,200 in 1967–68.
It won the television quiz University Challenge in 1967 and 1969. Also, in the late 1960s, the United Nations requested science policy recommendations from a team of renowned academics at the university, which materialised into the Sussex Manifesto report.
1980, Sussex beat out the prestigious University of Oxford to become the university with the highest income from research grants and contracts.
