History of Coventry University
Coventry University’s long history as an education provider can be traced as far back as 1843 with the founding of the Coventry School of Design.
It went through several name changes (Coventry School of Art and the Municipal Art School) before it became known as Coventry College of Art in the 1950s.
To meet the high demands of technical training which the then Coventry Technical College (now City College Coventry) could not meet in the late 1950s, Lanchester College of Technology was formed in honour of automotive industry pioneer, Dr Frederick Lanchester.
In 1970, it combined with the College of Art, and the Rugby College of Engineering Technology to form Lanchester Polytechnic. It kept this name up until 1987 when it was changed to Coventry Polytechnic before the final change to Coventry University after it was granted university status in 1992.
To further attract international students, the university established its London campus in 2010. Two years later Coventry University College was set up within the main campusoffering programs up to degree-level at a lower cost.
