University of Warwick history
The idea for a university in Warwickshire was first conceptualized shortly after World War II. However, it took two decades before it was approved by the government in 1961 and then received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965.
A bold and imaginative partnership between the city and county councils granted the 400-acre site for the university to be built on.
Since then, the university has established the Warwick Business School in 1967, a year before the Warwick Law School. The former Coventry College of Education was incorporated in 1979, a year before WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group) opened in 1980. The medical school (Warwick Medical) opened two decades later in the year 2000. Four years later Warwick HRI (Horticulture Research International) was formed following the merging of HRI's Wellesbourne and Kirton sites with the university.
