Where is Loughborough University located?
Loughborough University has two splendid campuses in the UK – one in the town of Loughborough in the Midlands in the heart of England and the other in London.
Loughborough campus
The university’s main campus is in Loughborough in the Borough of Charnwood in the county of Leicestershire. A small but busy market town with a vibrant history, Loughborough is home to about 66,000 people.
Loughborough is close to some fantastic countryside. The broad flat plain of the River Soar is at the centre of the area. To the east are some of England’s loveliest villages, including the rounded rolling hills of the Leicestershire Wolds. Close by is the historic Bradgate Park (from the 13th century) with roaming herds of red and fallow deer.
However, the town is much more than just countryside and bustling markets. It also provides the student essentials - plenty of open space, shopping, entertainment, and gardens.
Loughborough’s central location is also ideal for exploring further afield. The town is well served by road, rail, and air. Mainline road and rail networks link the town directly with the rest of the country. The University is less than two miles away from junction 23 of the M1 motorway and only 15 minutes from the East Midlands Airport by car. It is also only 1.5 hours by train from London, one hour from Birmingham, and two hours from Manchester and Leeds. Derby, Leicester, and Nottingham are some of the neighbouring cities.
Several tourist attractions, including the Peak District, Sherwood Forest, and the National Space Centre, are within reach of the Loughborough campus as well.
London campus
The university’s London campus sits on the east side of the city near Stratford. The campus is surrounded by many iconic world-class sporting facilities used in the 2012 Olympic Games, as well as cafés, shops, restaurants, and parklands.
Westfield Stratford City, the fourth biggest shopping centre in the UK, is also close to the campus just next to the Olympic Park.

Loughborough University history
The university has a long and proud history as an institution of further and higher education. In 1909, a small Technical Institute in the centre of Loughborough was established. Land was then acquired on the Burleigh Estate, which started the development of the university.
In 1966, in recognition of the excellence achieved by Loughborough College of Advanced Technology and its predecessor colleges, Loughborough was awarded its charter. It then became the Loughborough University of Technology, England’s first technological university. Thirty years later, it was renamed Loughborough University.
Several land acquisitions in 2003, 2006, and 2010 led to the establishment of the current glorious 440-acre main campus.
In 2015, the London campus opened its doors on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
