Newcastle University history
Newcastle University’s history goes all the way back to 1834 with the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery.
In 1937, the school merged with Armstrong College (founded in 1871) to form King’s College. In 1960, the institution’s scientists discovered the major brain biochemical defect that causes Alzheimer’s disease. Three years later, King’s College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne when the institution became independent from the University of Durham.
In 1984 the University’s new Medical School was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
In 2007, the university spread its wings to East Asia, setting up a campus in Singapore. Four years later it expanded further to neighbouring Malaysia, opening Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia. The London location was opened in 2015 by HRH Princess Eugenie of York.
Newcastle was awarded the world’s first mitochondrial licence, a licence to offer fertility treatments to mothers suffering of mitochondrial disease, in 2017.

What are the different types of rooms on offer?
There are three different types of rooms on offer:
Shared Rooms have two people sharing a bedroom. Additional living spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms are shared with other tenants from other rooms.
In a Private Room you’ll get a private bedroom and, depending on the property, possibly a private bathroom as well. Other living spaces will be shared with fellow students.
An Entire Place will give you the luxury of not having to share living facilities with anyone. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom, and a kitchenette. This is the perfect choice if you love your privacy!
