History of the University of Nottingham
The university traces its origins back to an adult education school founded in 1798, and the University Extension Lectures, which were introduced by the University of Cambridge in 1873. The actual foundation of the university is regarded to have happened in 1881 when the University College Nottingham was established. Back then, the goal of the university college was to prepare students for University of London examinations.
In 1928, after the First World War, the College relocated to its current main campus thanks to a generous gift of 35 acres of land at Highfields from Sir Jesse Boot. The University Park campus was officially opened by King George V and attracted high-profile visitors such as Professor Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and HG Wells in its early days.
The college became The University of Nottingham and gained the power to issue degrees in its own name after being granted a royal charter in 1948. The School of Agriculture was then established with a merger with the Midland College of Agriculture at Sutton Bonington.
In 1970 the university established the UK’s first Medical School in the 20th century before forming its School of Nursing with the merger of the Mid-Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery.
It then spread its wings internationally at the start of the new millennium with the opening of its purpose-built Malaysian campus in 2000, before making history in 2004 as the first foreign university to establish an independent campus in China with its purpose-built campus in Ningbo.
