University of Southampton history
The university’s history can be traced back to 1862 with the formation of the Hartley Institution. A name change to Hartley College in 1896 signified a shift from the part-time teaching of adult evening classes to the full-time teaching of students.
Six years later, in 1902, the institution adopted the word university in its name for the first time, becoming Hartley University College.
The current main campus, Highfield, was opened in 1919, providing much-needed space for the rising student population at the time. The first academic library (The Turner Sims Library) was opened in 1935. Twelve years later, one of the first departments of electronics in the world was founded by pioneering radio engineer Eric Zepler.
In one of her first official acts as monarch, Queen Elizabeth II granted the university college a royal charter in 1952, officially transitioning the institution to become the University of Southampton.
In the year 2000, the university launched the start-up enterprise Southampton Photonics, the largest ever successful university spin-out of its kind.
The inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, became a professor at the university’s computer science department in 2004.
