Go shopping along the busy High Street. Peel off and explore the Dutch Quarter, with its beautiful Roman and Victorian buildings. Be drawn inside the eye-catching golden building that’s home to the firstsite gallery and see some contemporary art. Go on a Roman River Walk along the River Colne then, when you’ve worked up a hunger, head to Thai 1 for a superb stir fry at one of the town’s great places to eat.

You can afford to lie in a little longer when you know classes at University of Essex’s Colchester Campus are just 10 minutes’ from your door. Living by the university means you can make use of the campus cafés and on-campus bookstore, Waterstones. From your home, you’re a short bus ride, easy bike ride, or half an hour-walk to the town centre. The town’s two train stations will connect you to surrounding areas, and taking a trip into London is easy with several trains an hour making the 60-minute journey into London Liverpool Street Station.

When you have work to do, come home to The Maltings, picking up a snack in the supermarket at the base of your building on your way to your room. Pass by reception if you need to use the postal service or have any questions about the bike storage, laundry or gym. There are quiet study spaces for you to sit and read and the Wi-Fi throughout The Maltings will make researching easy.

As well as study nooks, there’s commual social areas where you can hang out and get to know fellow students.
