There’s nothing better than a summer’s day in Brighton, when you can sit outside a lively beachfront bar and sip cold beer as you watch the waves crash on the pebbled shore. It’s just as good in winter; when it’s wet and windy, move indoors to one of the dozens of cool coffee shops – check out the crazy bric-a-brac, taxidermy and retro toys on display at The Marwood, or go for an ethical and environmentally-friendly bite to eat at Silo.

Take a walk through the shark tunnel at the Sea Life Centre, then ride the Volk’s Electric Railway all the way up the beach to Brighton Marina. Learn to dive or snorkel at Brighton Dive Centre, take a boat trip along the Sussex coast, or simply admire the yachts moored in the harbour. On sunny days, cycle or skate along the seafront, or catch the open-top bus up to local beauty spot Devil’s Dyke, where you’ll enjoy marvellous views across the South Downs.

Back in town, wander through the historic Lanes – these narrow, winding passageways are home to jewellery shops, one-off boutiques and cafés. Call into Blackbird Tearooms for delicious homemade scones with cream and jam, or enjoy coffee and cake as you watch a film at the independent Duke of York’s cinema.

After dark, tuck into curry at The Chilli Pickle then enjoy the arty vibe at The Cocktail Shack. End the night dancing to live jazz music at The Mesmerist, or to reggae beats at Riki Tik Beach Bar.
