Florence at a glance

Florence is the capital of Tuscany, the famous region in central Italy. A major part of why it is one of the most visited cities in the country is its central location, beauty and historic significance.

Located about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the Italian capital Rome, Florence (or Firenze in Italian) is famous for its natural beauty. Surrounded by gently rolling hills covered with villas and farms, vineyards, and orchards, the city attracts around 10 million tourists every year.

But with buildings that are works of art, Florence’s splendid infrastructure, which is intrinsically tied to its rich history, is also a major contributor to its allure.

Some of the city’s most popular and important sites such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi gallery, the Bargello, and the Accademia were designed and built by some of the most illustrious artists of their time - from Michelangelo to Brunelleschi.

A prosperous past that set the pace for a bright future

Called the “Cradle of the Renaissance,” Florence’s present glory is mainly due to its illustrious past. Its world-renowned infrastructure is a testament to past eras where the city achieved pre-eminence in the arts, commerce and finance, and learning sectors between the 14th and 16th centuries.

Back then a small city of moneylenders and cloth makers with little political and military power, Florence rose to prominence, becoming one of the first global cities in Europe.

The bold and innovative Florentine bankers of the Middle Ages and Renaissance helped to establish the city as Europe’s greatest financial hub. The ‘money men’ also played a vital role in laying the foundation of the modern global banking system.

Financial trailblazers and cultural giants like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dante, Machiavelli, Galileo, and the Medici family have left their aura of greatness stamped on the city’s splendour. Thanks to their great work, the entire city is like an open-air museum. Florence is one of a few cities in the world whose entire historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While some of the world’s best artistic treasures are on the inside, the city’s museums, palaces, and churches can also be admired from the outside.

The city is loaded with many other impressive attractions, so there’s plenty to see. Just by strolling its narrow, cobblestoned streets, you’ll see why the city earned its renaissance tag and attracts so many wondering foreigners.

You’ll also rub shoulders with people from all over the world. The city boasts one of the richest multicultural communities in Italy, possessing residents and visitors from several ethnicities, cultures, and religions.

Student life in Florence

Though Florence has a solid population of close to 400,000, the pace of life is slower compared to Rome and many other Italian cities.

It’s almost as if it’s done on purpose so visitors can better appreciate the city’s rich cultural offerings. More laid-back, Florence is not overwhelming or over-stimulating like other more metropolitan cities. But it offers enough of ‘big city’ amenities and experience for an enjoyable student life.

For cultural immersion, of course, there is a lot to explore in Florence. Enjoy rich collections of over thirty museums and numerous churches. Take away wonderful memories by absorbing the beauty of the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and the breath-taking view from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Florence is not all about culture and beauty, though. The city has busy streets filled with a lot of activity and buzzing Vespas, decent nightlife, plenty to see and do, and a loaded calendar of annual events.

Eating in Florence

Great food and wine are in abundance in Florence. Walk down any street, select any trattoria (small Italian restaurant), ristorante, or enoteca (wine shop) that seems appealing, and you’ll surely enjoy what you’ll find.

Make sure you’re ready for the occasion as dining out is an art in Florence. Italians tend to dress up for Passeggiata – the evening ritual between 5 pm and 8 pm where socialisation takes place after work and before dinner through the main streets of the city.

Nightlife

There are also multiple options to meet up with friends and have fun after Passeggiata. The Piazza Santa Croce area, one of the most famous squares in Florence, is one of the best spots to enjoy the night with an array of bars and pubs.

Florence’s central location makes for great travel opportunities

When you have some free time from classes, Florence is ideally located as a departure point to many other interesting locations. Most major local and European cities are easily accessible, whether by train or plane. The city sits on the principal north-south train line in Italy, and its airport operates daily flights to a wide variety of destinations, including Barcelona, Paris, London, Berlin, and Prague.
