Where is De Montfort University located?

De Montfort University (DMU) is located in the diverse, friendly and multicultural city of Leicester. Based in the East Midlands in the heart of England, just over an hour away from London, Leicester is the thirteenth-largest city in the United Kingdom.

DMU’s main campus is conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the city centre in very close proximity to restaurants, high street stores, designer boutiques, cinemas and a cultural quarter.

Rich with history, multiculturalism and diverse heritage, the city is the perfect location for students looking to experience the United Kingdom at its most vibrant.

It could be said to be the perfect size – big, diverse and multicultural enough to amaze, yet compact, friendly and safe enough for students to feel at home. It has been named in the top three UK student cities by NatWest’s 2020 Student Living Index only behind Manchester and Cambridge.

The city has a great choice of shops, restaurants; bars, a fantastic music scene, a lively mix of culture, entertainment and sports and lots of green spaces within and surrounding its boundaries.

Leicester is famous for its diversity with the most diverse street in England. According to researchers at the London School of Economics, Narborough Road – the mile-long gateway to the city centre from the West End – has 222 shop units with owners coming from 22 countries from around the world.

The city also knows how to have a good time. It hosts dozens of festivals throughout the year including the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India (the Hindu and Sikh Festival of Light) and The Caribbean Carnival, said to be the second biggest in the UK after only the massive Notting Hill Carnival in London.

Leicester also has great transport links. High-speed trains, buses and park-and-ride services provide reliable connections across the city as well as to other big cities in the Midlands and also London.

The university prides itself on combining teaching excellence with world-leading research. In recognition of its outstanding teaching and its positive impact on students, the university received a gold rating (the highest possible standard) in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2017.

With 22 National Teaching Fellows, its lecturers have also excelled in the prestigious National Teaching Fellow (NTF) awards, which celebrates and recognises individuals in higher education who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes.

With its close links to industries, more than half of the 300 courses at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels DMU offers are accredited by professional bodies.

The university offers a wide range of courses to help equip its students for some of the most lucrative professions and fastest-growing industries in the world such as Information Technology, Management, Law and Criminology, the creative industries and the health and life sciences sector.

With its wide offering of more than twenty different subject areas, high-quality teaching, and excellent studios and workshops, DMU is one of the leading universities for art and design in the UK. De Montfort students have won many high-profile national and international competitions and awards.

DMU student life

If you choose to study at De Montfort University, you’ll be studying at a diverse university where about 30% of the student population are from outside the UK.

In 2019 DMU was named the first-ever University of the Year for Social Inclusion by The Sunday Times Good University Guide. Each year the university accepts almost 3,000 international students from more than 130 countries across the globe.

You’ll also be studying in a modern and inspiring environment with innovative, sector-leading teaching facilities.

Top-notch facilities

In recent years, the university has invested over £130 million into developing the ‘campus of the future.’ The centrepiece of the transformation of the city centre site is the impressive Vijay Patel Building, the new base for the Faculty of Art, Design, and Humanities.

The new leisure centre which was designed by the architects behind the London 2012 Olympic aquatic centre, features a 25-metre swimming pool, a fully equipped gym, fitness studios and a climbing wall.

Strong support

At DMU there’s a range of student support services that will be available to you throughout the course of your studies.

The Centre for Learning and Study Support (CLaSS) provides a range of support to help you develop your academic and professional skills. Each faculty also has its own Student Advice Centre (SAC), which offers help, support and advice to students.

A dedicated International Student Support team assists international students by providing specialist advice and guidance along with general information about living and studying in Leicester.

DMU is also dedicated to creating an environment that caters to students’ health and wellbeing. Its Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing team provide opportunities for students to have confidential face-to-face conversations with people who can help them deal with any emotional or psychological issues.

On and off-campus employment

The university has a number of initiatives to help its students improve their employability.

‘Frontrunners’ and ‘Unitemps’ are campus-based placement schemes that allow students to put their knowledge into practice by offering part-time and temporary work on and off-campus.

The Careers and Employability Team also helps to prepare students for work-life by offering career guidance, psychometric testing, and CV assessment.

History of DMU

Named for the esteemed Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort, De Montfort University’s history dates back to 1870 when the Leicester School of Art was founded.

Since then, the university has evolved through many incarnations including the Leicester College of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic, which officially became De Montfort University on June 26, 1992, when it was awarded university status.

Two years later DMU Lincoln and DMU Bedford campuses were founded with the merger of Lincolnshire College of Art and Design, Lincolnshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture, and Bedford College of Higher Education.

The following year DMU merged with Charles Frears School of Nursing and Midwifery.

In 2006 the Bedford campus merged with the University of Luton to become the University of Bedfordshire.

In 2012 Queen Elizabeth II graced the DMU campus with her presence to kick off Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee Tour.
