Where is Leicester Uni located?

The University of Leicester is located south of the city centre of Leicester, the tenth-largest city in England and the largest city in England’s East Midlands region.

The university’s campus conveniently sits adjacent to the lush open spaces and tree-lined paths of Victoria Park, and a stone’s throw away from the vibrant shops, bars, and restaurants of Queens Road.

Over 10 percent of the city’s population of 300,000 are students and it is easy to see why they are drawn to the city.

Rich in cultural diversity

Rich in culture and diversity with a large number of ethnic events such as the Diwali celebrations (the largest outside of India) and the second-largest Caribbean Carnival in the UK, living in Leicester will feel like the world is on your doorstep.

Long and diverse history

The city’s diversity is primarily a result of its long history. The inhabitation of people of different races and cultures over centuries has created a rich and unique heritage.

First recognised by the Romans and later by the Danes, Leicester was used as a strategic stronghold to control the Midlands.

A progressive city

Not hung on its past, Leicester is now a city that is always moving forwards.

It has developed into a major diverse commercial and manufacturing centre and is considered the third most ‘progressive’ city in the UK, according to a 2020 survey by mortgage experts Bankrate UK.

Leicester was named as one of the best cities to live and work in by the 2019 Good Growth for Cities Index developed by PwC and the think tank Demos.

Leicester is great for students

Leicester is among the most economical places to live in the UK, making Leicester a top student-friendly city. This affordability lends to the city’s high ranking in the 2021 NatWest Student Living Index placing in the top 10 in the UK.

Leicester is also an excellent city after you graduate. It’s a great place to develop your career. It was named the top city in the UK for hiring in 2020 with the fastest-growing jobs market in the UK, according to experts in a report from recruitment website CV-library.

The city is also a haven for budding entrepreneurs. It placed eighth out of 40 UK locations in a survey published by StartUpsGeek.com, a respected online magazine covering entrepreneurship. Tech Nation also named it the best place in the country for tech start-ups in a 2018 report and a Capital on Tap study positioned the city among the UK’s start-up hotspots.

Leicester Uni student life

When you’re not busy learning, there is a lot to get involved in. The University of Leicester believes in the holistic development of its students. The vibrant campus is ordained with sports arenas, fitness centres, cafeterias, auditoriums, and parks.

Various sports and cultural clubs, events, fests, concerts, exhibitions, and fairs on campus ensure cross-disciplinary participation amongst students encouraging strong team spirit.

When life on campus gets a bit too routine, the university is ideally located close to the city centre where you can explore its many attractions.

Galleries, festivals and nature

Leicester Museum and Art Gallery is a short walk away from campus. It features displays across science, history, and art, and it’s completely free to visit.

Many independent venues host free shows throughout the week across the whole city where you can enjoy some of the city’s finest up-and-coming talent.

The University has its own Botanic Garden with 16 acres of cultivated grounds. The campus also sits alongside the city’s Victoria Park, a large open space that sometimes hosts large-scale concerts.

History of the University of Leicester

Founded as Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland University College, the university first admitted students in 1921. Its original site was donated by local businessman Thomas Fielding Johnson, to create a living memorial for all local people who participated in the First World War.

In 1927, the university was renamed to University College, Leicester. It was granted a Royal Charter in 1957, meaning it earned the status of a university with the right to award its own degrees.

Frequently asked questions about Leicester Uni student accommodation

Utilise our search filters, comparison, and map tools to find your ideal student property. After you’ve made your selection, go to the property page by clicking ‘View rooms’.

Why should I choose to live in private student accommodation rather than in student halls?

Living in a private student accommodation rather than university halls provides several advantages. Many modern PBSAs (purpose-built student accommodations) offer great amenities to their inhabitants, typically including things like in-house gyms, cinema rooms and a varied social calendar, which is great for making new friends.

You’ll also be able to live in any area of Leicester you’d like, whether you prefer to live further south, within walking distance of the University of Leicester campus, or right in the buzzle of the city centre.

Another advantage about living in private student accommodation is that you can freely choose the room type you want to live in. You can still share with flatmates like in uni halls, but you can also choose to live in a fully self-contained studio property by yourself.

What are the different types of student rooms you list?

Shared Rooms offer a shared bedroom with a roommate. Bathroom and other living facilities will be shared with other tenants from other rooms.

Private Rooms offer you a private bedroom. Depending on the property, the bathroom might be either shared or private. Other facilities are shared with other students.

An Entire Place offers a fully self-contained studio flat where you’ll have your own living facilities. This includes a private bedroom, bathroom and a kitchenette for cooking meals.

Are bills included in the rent?

In most of the properties we list near the University of Leicester, bills are included in the rent. This does depend on the landlord though, so check the property page of the property you’re interested in to make sure if this is the case.

Are the flats you list fully furnished?

As with bills, most properties we list are fully furnished. However, if you have a specific property you’ve got your eye on, check the property page to make sure if that particular property is rented fully furnished or not.
