Sheffield at a glance

Sheffield is a lively, student-centric metropolis with a diverse nightlife and a lively music scene. Living there you’ll be surrounded by history, as the area is believed to have been inhabited for almost 13,000 years. Sheffield was known for its production of cutlery already in the 14th century and during the Industrial Revolution it acquired the nickname Steel City. The Industrial Revolution brought factories and wealth but also pollution and overpopulation that made George Orwell call Sheffield the ugliest town in the Old World.

Sheffield has come far from those days though, and in recent years it has transformed into a vibrant cultural powerhouse. The regeneration of public spaces has created a post-industrial landscape rich in sculptures, statues and water features that flow through the city centre. Between your studies you can explore Sheffield’s innovative music scene by watching a band at the Leadmill, the legendary music venue where the Arctic Monkeys blossomed into rock stars. Wind through the foothills of the Pennines as a tram takes you out of the city centre to Lower Sheffield, a diverse and bohemian suburb rich in leafy open spaces.

Sheffield is great for student life

Sheffield is the fifth largest city in the UK and has a vibrant community of 60,000 students, so it’s a great city to study in. The cost of living is well below the national average and with so many students around, lots of places offer student discounts.

Sheffield offers many student bars, clubs and live music venues, but also plenty of green spaces - 60% of the city’s area is covered by parks, gardens and countryside, with the beautiful Peak District National Park also close by.

Lots of interesting festivals

Living in Sheffield, you’ll notice there’s always something interesting going on. The city has the UK’s largest community of artists and designers outside London and there are lots of festivals organised throughout the year. During the Sheffield Food Festival the city centre is full of pop-up restaurants. Doc/Fest is a documentary film festival in June and in July Tramlines sees tens of thousands of people taking the tram from the city centre to Hillsborough Park where you can see over 70 bands and artists perform across four stages. Sensoria in September offers one-off gigs, film screenings and installations across the city.

Sheffield is great for shopping

When you need to do some shopping, there are lots of exciting high street options in the city centre. Another option you don’t want to miss is the massive Meadowhall shopping centre, located about 3.5 miles northeast of the city centre and boasting 1.5 million square feet (140,000 square metres) of shopping space.

Universities in Sheffield

There are two universities in Sheffield. These are the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Both of these are consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in the UK, with the University of Sheffield being ranked number 16 in the UK and number 96 in the world in the QS World University Rankings for 2023.

University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield was established in 1828 as Sheffield Medical School. In 1897 it merged with Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School to form the University College of Sheffield, which became the University of Sheffield in 1905. Today the university has about 30,000 students and is a member of the Russell Group as well as one of the nine original red brick universities. Over 11,000 of the students are from outside the UK, so you’ll get to enjoy a cosmopolitan atmosphere while studying at the University of Sheffield.

Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University was established in 1843 as Sheffield School of Design. It received university status in 1992 and changed its name from Sheffield City Polytechnic to the current Sheffield Hallam University at the same time. Today it has about 31,000 students, over 3,000 of whom are from abroad.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation in Sheffield

How do I apply for student housing in Sheffield?

Applying for student accommodation is easy on Student.com. On this page you can see all the options available to you. Once you’ve chosen a property, click ‘View rooms’ to go to the property page. There you can choose the room type you’d like to live in. After this, click ‘Enquire’ or ‘Book now’. One of our booking consultants will get in touch with you and take you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have.

If you’re not sure which property to choose, you can always give our booking consultants a call and they will be happy to help and give you more information on the different options.

What are the different room types available in Sheffield?

In Sheffield we list three different types of student rooms.

In a Shared Room you share a bedroom with a flatmate. Other facilities will also be shared with other students.

In a Private Room you get a private bedroom just for yourself. Depending on the property, the bathroom may be private or shared. Other facilities will be shared with other students.

If you book the Entire Place, you’ll get a fully self-contained studio apartment just for yourself. No need to share with anyone, as you’ll get your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette for cooking your meals.

Is it safe to rent student accommodation in the private sector?

We carefully vet all the accommodation providers we feature in order to ensure that you’ll have no problems with your chosen accommodation. The properties we list are managed by experienced landlords so you can be rest assured that you’ll have a great experience, wherever you choose to live.

Can I live with a friend or a partner?

Many of the accommodation providers we list offer dual occupancy for no extra charge. So if you want to for example share a studio apartment with your partner, that should be alright.

If you want to live in a shared flat with a friend of yours, this can usually be arranged as well. When you contact one of our booking consultants, make sure you remember to tell them that you’d like to live together with your friend, and make sure your friend does the same when they are booking their room. Our booking consultants can then let the landlord know that you’d like to be placed in the same apartment.

Can you arrange viewings for me?

Many of the accommodation options we list in Sheffield have a lot of good photos, videos and even virtual tours that you can see on the property pages. So you can get a good idea of what your new home will look like even without a viewing.

If you’d prefer to see the place for yourself before moving in though, and you can get to Sheffield before your move-in date, our booking consultants can also set up a viewing for you. Just give us a call and we can arrange it for you.

What bills are included in the rent?

This depends on the landlord, so you’ll want to check the property page of the property you’re interested in. However, all bills are included in most of the properties we list in Sheffield. This typically includes water, heating, electricity and also WiFi, so in most cases, you won’t have to pay for anything else than the room.

Do I need a guarantor?

Most landlords in Sheffield will require you to have a guarantor. A guarantor can be anyone, but it’s typically a family member, like a parent. A guarantor is someone who will agree to pay your rent in case you are unable to pay it yourself.
