The institution can trace its origins to 1881 when it became the Los Angeles branch of the California Normal School, but it really started life as a university in 1919. That’s when the California State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 626, officially creating the Southern Branch of the University of California, which would later become UCLA.

The university opened its doors to 379 students and 32 faculty members in 1920. In 1927 UCLA’s first football team played its inaugural game, marking the university’s foray into collegiate sports.

In the 1940s, the university contributed to World War II and the post-war rebuilding. It hosted military training programs on campus in 1942 and established the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, which blended art and culture into the university’s landscape. UCLA’s School of Public Health was also established in 1945 and helped with post-war expansion.

The 1950s was a time of advancements and innovations for the university. In 1954, UCLA became the first university to host the National College Bowl television quiz show. In 1959, its researchers created the first link between computers, laying the foundation for digital advancements.

The 1960s was a decade of transformation for the university. In 1960, the UCLA Medical Centre performed its first successful kidney transplant, marking a milestone in medical innovation. By 1964, UCLA’s Engineering IV Building became a hub for engineering research and advancements. That same year the famous UCLA Bruins basketball team won its first NCAA Basketball Championship under legendary coach John Wooden. They went on to win 10 national championships in 12 seasons.

The 2000s was a time of impact and sustainability for UCLA. In 2006, The Luskin Conference Centre opened, providing a hub for academic conferences and events. Three years later, UCLA committed to sustainability by establishing the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge.
