History of the University of Queensland
The University of Queensland was founded in 1909 and it was the first university in the state of Queensland. Teaching started in 1911 and in the first year there were 83 students.
The site of the current main campus in St Lucia was bought in 1926 after the university had grown rapidly after World War I. During World War II, the Forgan Smith Building on the St Lucia site was used as the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.
In 1990 UQ merged with the Queensland Agricultural College, which made the Gatton campus part of the University of Queensland and led to a large increase in UQ’s enrollment.
In 1999 the university acquired a campus in Ipswich. However, the Ipswich campus was not a part of the university for long since it was transferred to the University of Southern Queensland in 2015.
Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near the University of Queensland
Why should I live in private student accommodation instead of a UQ rental?
There are many good reasons for choosing to live in off-campus accommodation as a UQ student. When you live off-campus, you can choose the area you’ll live in more freely. So whether you’d like to live right next to the UQ St Lucia campus or in the Brisbane city centre, you can find accommodation options for you on Student.com.
Secondly, you can freely choose your preferred room type. You can choose to live with a roommate in our shared rooms as well, but you can always also choose to book yourself a private studio where you won’t have to share with anyone, even as a first-year student.
The third thing that makes off-campus accommodation a great option is that many modern PBSAs (purpose-built student accommodations) have great amenities on offer for their students. Many of the properties we list have things like in-house gyms and cinema and games rooms that their inhabitants can take full advantage of. This is not only a great way to spend your free time, but also very good for meeting new people and making new friends.
