Studying at the University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is a very well-respected university, ranking as the 46th best university in the world in the QS World University Rankings in 2021. This makes it the 5th best university in Australia and the best in the state of Queensland.

UQ is a large university with an enrolment of about 55,000 students, about 22,000 of whom are international students. This makes UQ a very international university with a cosmopolitan atmosphere, a place where you can not only learn during your lectures and classes, but also widen your horizons by getting to know people from all over the world.

For your studies, you can choose from hundreds of courses in six different faculties. The UQ faculties are:

In addition to the six faculties, UQ also has a graduate school where you can study for a PhD. UQ offers several scholarships that you can apply for if you are studying for a doctorate.

UQ student life

Brisbane is an international city with a cosmopolitan vibe, making it a great place to live during your university years.

When you join UQ as a new student, you’ll get to take part in the Orientation Week, or O-Week as it’s called at the University Queensland. This way you’ll get a good introduction to university life right away and will have a great chance to meet other new students right away. Both the St Lucia and Gatton campuses organise a Welcome BBQ during the O-Week. The O-Week is capped off at the St Lucia campus with the Sunset Social, a late-night social gathering you won’t want to miss.

After you’ve made UQ your home and have started your studies, it’s also a good time to start thinking about activities for your free time. The University of Queensland has over 200 clubs and societies where you can meet new people with similar interests. When you want to keep fit and do some physical exercise, you’ll have lots of options at the UQ. The St Lucia campus has a fitness centre, athletics centre, tennis centre and an aquatic centre. History of the University of Queensland

The University of Queensland was founded in 1909 and it was the first university in the state of Queensland. Teaching started in 1911 and in the first year there were 83 students.

The site of the current main campus in St Lucia was bought in 1926 after the university had grown rapidly after World War I. During World War II, the Forgan Smith Building on the St Lucia site was used as the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

In 1990 UQ merged with the Queensland Agricultural College, which made the Gatton campus part of the University of Queensland and led to a large increase in UQ’s enrollment.

In 1999 the university acquired a campus in Ipswich. However, the Ipswich campus was not a part of the university for long since it was transferred to the University of Southern Queensland in 2015.

Frequently asked questions about student accommodation near the University of Queensland

Why should I live in private student accommodation instead of a UQ rental?

There are many good reasons for choosing to live in off-campus accommodation as a UQ student. When you live off-campus, you can choose the area you’ll live in more freely. So whether you’d like to live right next to the UQ St Lucia campus or in the Brisbane city centre, you can find accommodation options for you on Student.com.

Secondly, you can freely choose your preferred room type. You can choose to live with a roommate in our shared rooms as well, but you can always also choose to book yourself a private studio where you won’t have to share with anyone, even as a first-year student.

The third thing that makes off-campus accommodation a great option is that many modern PBSAs (purpose-built student accommodations) have great amenities on offer for their students. Many of the properties we list have things like in-house gyms and cinema and games rooms that their inhabitants can take full advantage of. This is not only a great way to spend your free time, but also very good for meeting new people and making new friends.

How do I apply for St Lucia student housing?

The good thing about living off-campus is that you get to choose the part of the city to live in. Booking UQ accommodation near the St Lucia campus works just the same way as booking any room on Student.com. First, you can use the map feature to find accommodation in the area you like. You can also use the different filters on this page to find the type of housing you’re looking for.

When you’ve found a property you like, click on the ‘View rooms’ button to go to the property page. There you can choose your preferred room type and click ‘Enquire’. You can then create an account for yourself and one of our booking consultants will soon contact you. They’ll answer any questions you may have, and once you’re ready to make a booking, they’ll take you through the booking process and prepare a contract for you to sign.

What are the different room types you offer?

On Student.com we offer three different types of rooms:

  • Shared Room
  • Private Room
  • Entire Place

In a Shared Room, you’ll share your bedroom with a roommate. Other facilities like the bathroom are shared with occupants of other rooms.

If you book a Private Room, you’ll get a private bedroom just for yourself. Your bathroom might be either private or shared depending on the property. Other facilities will be shared with other students.

If you go for the Entire Place option, you’ll get a fully self-contained studio room just for yourself. This will include a private bedroom, bathroom and a small kitchenette for cooking your meals. You won’t have to share with anyone, so this option is great if you love your space.
