History of Loughborough University
Loughborough University’s history dates back to 1909 when it opened its doors to students interested in attending evening classes in technical subjects as well as science and art.
In its early years, the school emulated the Oxbridge colleges with students wearing gowns to lectures.
During World War I (1914-1918), the institute helped train workers for the munitions industry, acting as an “instructional factory.”
After the war, it split into four separate colleges:
- Loughborough Training College (teacher training)
- Loughborough College of Art (art and design)
- Loughborough College of Further Education (technical and vocational training)
- Loughborough College of Technology (technology and science)
Loughborough College of Technology would become the nucleus of Loughborough University.
In April 1966, Loughborough College of Advanced Technology was awarded its Charter before being renamed Loughborough University of Technology that same year.
After evolving into a more traditional university by diversifying its academic offerings with the introduction of the humanities, arts, and sciences, Loughborough University dropped the “of Technology” from its name in 1996.
In 2015, the Loughborough University London campus was opened in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
