That same year, it changed its name to The Royal Polytechnic Institution when Prince Albert – Queen Victoria’s consort – became Patron.
The Polytechnic was renamed Regent Street Polytechnic in 1891 and the first Board of Governors created after it began receiving public funding. In 1896, the first public presentation of a moving picture in the UK was held in the Polytechnic Theatre.
The Polytechnic organised the marathon and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1908 Olympic Games.
It transformed into a multi-site institution through a major new expansion scheme on Regent Street from 1945–70. By the end of the expansion, the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) was formed from the merger of Regent Street Polytechnic and Holborn College of Law and Commerce.
PCL later merged with Harrow College of Higher Education in 1990. Two years later it gained University status and the right to award its own degrees and participate in publicly funded research. This was when it acquired the current name of the University of Westminster.
Expansion overseas resulted in the University winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2000 and 2005.
