Victoria University was originally established in 1916 with the name Footscray Technical School. Women first enrolled in day diploma classes in 1960. In the 1960s many European and Asian students also started attending the VU after changes to the Australian government’s immigration policy made it easier for foreign students to arrive.
The institution changed its name to Victoria University of Technology and gained full university status in 1990. The name was changed again in 2005 when Victoria University assumed its current name.
