History of Complutense University of Madrid

On May 20, 1293, King Sancho IV of Castile granted the Archbishop of Toledo, Gonzalo Pérez Gudiel, a Royal Charter to found a studium generale (a university), named El Estudio de Escuelas Generales in the city of Alcalá de Henares.

On April 13, 1499, a Papal bull to expand it into a full university was secured by Cardinal Cisneros from Pope Alexander VI. This Papal Bull conferred official recognition throughout Christendom to all degrees granted by the university. At this time the institution was also renamed Universitas Complutensis.

In 1785, Complutense became one of the first universities in the world to grant a doctorate to a female student when María Isidra de Guzmán y de la Cerda was awarded the honour.

In 1824, Complutense was further expanded when it was merged with the University of Sigüenza.

The institution took on the name of Literary University after Queen Regent Maria Christina suppressed the university in Alcalá and ordered its move to Madrid through a royal order in 1836. It was renamed again in 1851 to the Central University of Madrid (Universidad Central de Madrid) until its original name of “Complutense” was restored in the 1970s.

In 1923, the University awarded Albert Einstein a Doctor of Science degree Honoris Causa, which was the first Doctor of Science degree Honoris Causa he accepted from a European university.

Why should I book off-campus housing rather than UCM residence halls?

Booking off-campus housing gives you many benefits compared to residence halls. You’ll get to live in any type of room you want, whether you prefer to share with others or have a completely private apartment just for yourself. You’ll also get to live in any area of Madrid that you like, whether you want to live right next to either one of the Complutense campuses, in the city centre or any other area of Madrid that you like.

What are the different room types you offer?

We offer three different types of rooms in Madrid. Do note however, that not all properties we list have all the three room types available.

In a Shared Room you’ll share your bedroom with a roommate. All other facilities are also shared.

In a Private Room you get a private bedroom just for you. Depending on the property you choose, your bathroom may also be private, or you might have to share a bathroom. Other facilities are shared with other people.

In an Entire Place you get a fully self-contained, private apartment just for you. You’ll have your own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette and won’t have to share any of it with others, so this is the perfect choice if you love having some privacy and time just for yourself!

Do you offer housing for international students?
