École Polytechnique

École Polytechnique, also known as L'X, is one of Europe’s most prestigious engineering schools and one of the top small universities in the world. Established in 1794, it offers a multidisciplinary curriculum with a focus on physics, mathematics, economics and computer science.

Metro 

For locals and international students alike, the metro is generally the preferred mode of transport when travelling within Paris’ central areas. Fast and economical, the metro system has 16 lines and over 300 stations with services running regularly throughout the day.


On weekdays, metro lines operate from 5.30am until 1.15am, while on Friday and Saturday nights they run an extended service through to 2.15am — good news for those who like to go out at weekends! 

Bus 

Alongside the metro system, Paris has an extensive bus network offering students another way to travel cheaply. There are over 60 routes across the city, covering all the central areas and most of the suburbs.


For partygoing students needing to get home after the metro has closed, Noctillen night bus lines operate from 12:30 am to about 5:30am, allowing you to travel at any hour. 

Tram 

The Paris tram network has more than a dozen lines connecting the outer districts with the city’s central areas. It’s great for students travelling into the city from the suburbs and provides an alternative to the metro during rush hour.


One of the best things about the tram network is that it’s integrated with the metro and bus systems, meaning students can often transfer from one service to another within the same station.

Eating out for less 

Despite the high overall cost of living in Paris, students can live on a budget by taking advantage of French government programs and the many other student deals for meals, transportation and cultural attractions.


Through CROUS, a public establishment of the French Ministry of Education, students can enjoy a three-course meal at specific restaurants and university cafeterias dotted across the city for as little as €3.10. 

Sightseeing passes

Students can make use of discounts and free entry when sightseeing. Most French museums and monuments are owned by the government and offer free admission to students. For example, you can often visit the Louvre for free on the first Friday of every month after 6pm.


With a Paris Museum Pass, you can access over 50 sites around the city. The more comprehensive Paris Pass is also worth looking into, as it provides access to over 90 attractions and offers discounts on public transport. 

Discounts on travel 

If you’re a university student under the age of 26, you can get a Carte Imagine R, which gives you unlimited travel on public transportation anywhere in the Ile-de-France region. The pass is valid for one year and currently costs €374.40.


If you’re planning a day trip away from Paris, tickets on the national train system, SNCF, can be quite pricey. To save money on train travel, you can get a Carte Jeune, which lets young people buy train tickets at a discounted price.

What types of student housing do you offer in Paris?
